this by the vigorous swinging of his arms in the opposite direction. When the right leg goes forward, the right arm goes backward and the left arm goes forward. Let the reader stand and swing his arms vigorously, as in running, and observe the effects on his hips. The stronger arms are also heavier and when swung vigorously, actually increase the length of the stride, or if swung properly, increase the height of the jump. It should be obvious to anyone that more strength will aid in putting the shot, in throwing the discus, or moving a football guard out of the way. Hence muscular development of athletes can well be selective. That is, the muscles needed for the athlete's best performance can be given special attention. This article is not the place for a muscular analysis of all sports. It may help, however, to give one or two illustrations. The shot putter, the discus thrower, or the boxer may (to his detriment as an athlete) neglect the development of the serratus anterior muscle while trying to develop primarily his triceps, his chest muscles, and the muscles on the front of his shoulders. This serratus anterior muscle runs forward under the shoulder blade from its vertebral border to the sides of the athlete's chest, and is the important muscle used to pull the shoulder forward. Likewise, the discus thrower and the shot putter gains much of his force from the rotation (to his left if right handed) at the hip joints. The muscles rotating the thighs at the hip joints are not naturally very strong, hence they need much attention if the athlete is not to have an (athletically) weak link in his chain of strength. Each coach should know his anatomy and kinesiology (application of the action of muscles to their tasks) if he is to prescribe the best weight training routine for his athletes.
